Grand Canyon South Rim Hiking, Tours and Information

Most Grand Canyon visitors begin at the South Rim mainly because gateway cities like Williams, Tusayan and Flagstaff are great places stay when lodging in the Grand Canyon are fully booked a year in advance. While the North Rim is great for the more adventurous hiking and true outdoor experiences, the South Rim has something for everyone.

South Rim Hikes

There are several Grand Canyon South Rim hiking trails to choose from, but the most popular is the day hike along Bright Angel Trail. This hike is easy and there are many hikers along this path. For those who are not spending the night or are not able to hike down the canyon, this path offers visitors the opportunity to see ancient hieroglyphics and rare wildlife. Another visitor-friendly way to see the Grand Canyon is the Rim Trail. This path goes along the rim of the South Rim and is paved between Pipe Creek Vista and Hermits Rest, but unpaved between Maricopa Point and Hermits Rest. The Colorado River hike takes about 2 -days to the river and back from the South Rim, and it is not recommended to attempt the hike in one day. But the Colorado River offers unique adventures and scenery - so take some time to explore while you are there!

Grand Canyon South Rim Tours and Transportation
Grand Canyon air tours, Colorado River rafting and bus tours are great ways to get different views the Grand Canyon. Tours depart from gateway cities like Las Vegas, Kanab, Williams, Tusayan and Flagstaff. Regardless of your Grand Canyon tour's origin or mode of transport, you won't leave the world's most-famous chasm without a deeper understanding of what makes it so special. Listed above is a full list of Grand Canyon licensed South Rim tour guides and operators.
Grand Canyon South Rim Visitor Info
The South Rim is open year round including holidays and has the most lodging available compared to the other rims. The South Rim is approximately 7,000 ft (2,134m) above see level. Mind the weather when planning a trip as November through February is much cooler in temperature. There is a free shuttle that goes to the Canyon View Information Plaza, where visitors will find a bookstore, museum, food, gift shopping and restroom facilities. We recommend a guided Grand Canyon hiking/walking tour, scenic Grand Canyon flight, mule ride, jeep tour, or commercial Grand Canyon rafting trip from any of the Grand Canyon South Rim tour companies listed on this page or find driving directions, maps and answers to frequently asked questions(FAQs).
